Contrary to our modern delusion, insects are not the enemies of plants. The plants that we depend upon co-evolved with the insects that pollinate them and ensure the fertility of the soil. Partnership, not infestation, is the norm. Monarch caterpillars feed exclusively on the milkweed. So their relationship is an unusually clear example of the way that plants and animals, passing the gift of life back and forth to one another, grow together. |
