The milkweed seems not to be harmed by the caterpillar but to grow taller and stronger in response to the insect's activity. Strangely, host plants produce more flower-heads and more seed-pods than plants that have not been stressed in this way. In time, the caterpillar must embark upon the rough voyage of metamorphosis. It takes its last bite of solid food, then seeks a high and sheltered place.
